Early Season Powder

Hope you have waxed your skis and snowboards.

After a warm start to December, winter has come in full force. The season is off to a great start here in the Hakuba Valley, with snow falling continuously over the last couple of days leaving us with about 30cm in valley, and turning the town into the winter wonderland you’d hope for in the lead up to Christmas and New Year.

We have first hand reports that Hakuba Goryu had up to 70cm of fresh snow on their wide Grand Prix course, plenty of space for social distancing!

The forecast for the remainder of the week is promising too. Another 70cm is predicted to fall on the resorts on Tuesday/ Wednesday, and a further 30cm on Friday night and Monday morning. On top of this, the 7-14 day long range forecasts are saying there could be a heavy snowfall on the way next week, with some sites estimating as much as 100cm to hit the resort. This could make for an incredible start to the season, possibly even rivaling the snow amount of all of last season.

Already there’s a huge air of excitement around resort. Many of the Hakuba Valley locals have been out riding and the feedback is very positive and hopeful for the coming season. Good early season snowfall gives the snowpack a chance to build, which means it also sticks around for longer at the end of the season.

With the way things are currently shaping up, there’s definitely reason to be optimistic for a good season of snow
